A ride around Maui

Wow it has been too long but now its summer and I’ll try to pack the pages full of adventure.
Last week I flew over to Lanai, picked up my bike, took the ferry over to Maui and spent several days biking around the Valley Isle. Along with me is my GT mtn bike, Sierra Designs one man tent AKA “The Stash” and my new MSR Pocket Rocket stove, we all got along fine and had fun.
Here’s the Stash at Wai’anapanapa State Park, Hilo had lost all power this day and only the Hasegawa General store was running on generators. I did not have a reservation so I called Julie, she booked it online and faxed the res over to the store so I could stay the night, the state worker was kind of a jerk over this whole reservations thing.

It rained quite a bit that night and the stash stayed dry and even with the rain fly on all night, there was no condensation inside. Good Stuff!
I have biked the Hana Hwy twice before but both times it was in the dark over night. Therefore I was determined to bike the 50 or so miles in the daylight and enjoy the views along the way. This stretch was pretty cool as you can see the road ahead cut into the sea cliffs.

A few years ago a friend and I did an adventure race on Maui and our last twenty miles was on the Kings Highway. Here’s a picture of what the trail looks like, those are softball sized chunks of lava, that are hot and sharp.

A sign describing its build in the 1800’s, the trail is 20 miles this is just pointing out the next 2 miles. I covered about 6 miles before heading uphill to the Pilani hwy.

And this foto is where Julie saved my life during the race. Hawk and I started the twenty miles at sunrise during the third day of the race. We each had 2 liters of water and got low way too early. The trail is hot and hurts, eats your shoes and feet, so when my cell showed a bar, I called Julie (again NOT last week, this was during the race about 8 years ago) I asked Julie to get a few gallons of water and drive to the end of the road, and keep going for as far as the car would take her. It was this step up ahead that stopped her and as night fell, I reached this point, dehydrated, hallucinating, and in serious need of aqua. That’s why I say she saved my life here.

Moving on Maui has some nice beach parks near the airport, for some reason they do not allow the surfers to go in before 11AM? Typical government stupidity….

And finally on my last night while camping at Olowalu, I took this of the Naranyag Bulan AKA the Full Moon.

I would be leaving Monday for Wyoming but the snow fall this winter was about 4x’s normal so I’ll play a little more here in the Islands.
See you on the trails Amigo’s!
