To celebrate my new occupation, which gives me two weeks off every Christmas, The two of us decided to hear the call of the mountains and push on. We wanted to include some train riding to see the Northern winter scenes.
We left Seattle train station just before sundown and woke up in Idaho. Soon Glacier National Park zipped by and we spent the day crossing Montana always moving towards Chicago.
Here’s the two of us next to the train in Havre, Montana.
Julie looking aft
Me looking forward, in all I think we had 9 cars to the train.
Somewhere along the way we crossed the Continental Divide. The rivers now went east., and still others went South, such as the Mississippi which we crossed on the day we arrived into Chicago.
In Chicago we had an agreeable meal then took off to Winnipeg. Minus 20 degrees met us there and we tested out the latest in cold weather apparel. The next day we jumped onto Canadian Railroad’s route #1 The Canadian. Thru Edmonton, and into Jasper National Park which a beautiful place where we followed a river between the cliffs and saw Elk, Coyotes, Big Horn Sheep, and no moose!
Pulled into Kamloops at 11PM where a taxi was waiting to take us to Sun Peaks Ski Village. Here’s our room in the center, you see one hill behind but the summit is not visible, then there is another mountain to the left and the right. Three hills to ski every day!
Julie and I at the base, about 200 ft from our hotel.
Me on the five mile trail.
After lunch at the restaurant half way up the main hill.
Skiing back down, notice my terrible form of leaning back, this would later haunt me in the powder of the Monashee mountain range.
Then we drove north for 3 hours to Blue River. We caught up with my buddy that I climbed the Nose of Elcap with. Here’s us at the start, back two years ago.
He’s a Helo Ski guide and put us up in a comfy Chalet. The view outside…
After 3 hours of Avalance, Safety and Helo ops training we were ready to go. I was asked ot carry an avalance pack with shovel, and such so I ran back and dropped off my pack and told Julie were are ready to go. She jumped up and took this with her phone as our ski lift whisked us away
We stopped for lunch, notice the helo on the peak above,
The skiing was incredible, across open slopes of 2 ft powder, thru forests, and down snow covered river beds. At the end of the day I was a little beat
And then we drove back to Kamloops, flew to Vancouver, then to Seattle (US customs!!!) and now I am back at home in the Islands. Truly a logistical masterpiece and an enjoyable little Christmas outing.
See you on the Trails Amigo’s
